GeoCell
EnviroGrid® GeoCell, a cellular confinement system, is a geoengineering technique that effectively stabilizes soft soils and provides erosion control. This issue affects soil systems which derails progress in affected industries. The system was developed in the 1970s by the US Army Corps of Engineers to construct roads over softer soils and has since been adapted for various construction projects worldwide.
EnviroGrid® is a versatile, engineered material that can be utilized in many construction techniques. It can confine and strengthen infill material within its honeycomb-like structure.
The benefits it provides to the confined infill material are numerous, including strengthening its load-bearing capabilities, preventing lateral movement, enhancing its lifespan, and overall, providing durable stabilization.
EnviroGrid® can be used for various construction applications, such as retaining wall construction, slope protection, and erosion control. Thermal and electrical energy can also be a benefit of EnviroGrid®, with a passive, energy-recovery system.
The three different product types are the EGA 20, EGA 30 and the EGA 40. The Envirogrid® EGA 30 is the standard size constructed of 58 strips of HDPE with a length of 29 cells, resulting in a section length of 142 inches or 3.6 meters long x 17.5 inches wide, 448×446mm, using HDPE. Each strip is 142 inches in length and the approved width.
Weld spacing is 17.5 inches ± .12 inches, or 446 ± 3mm. Cell density is 22 cells per meter squared. Cell walls are textured, with a minimum of 11-16% – 2% of their surface removed to install perforations required for the application purpose.
Installation Guide for Slope Applications
Step 1: Prepare the trench as directed by the engineer.
Step 2: Install a layer of geotextile as directed by the manufacturer, if necessary.
Step 3: Insert the first cell of the panels into the anchor trench. To keep Envirogrid® in place, backfill the trench or pin the geocell into it.
Step 4: Deploy panels while mounting J-hooks. Expanding cells down the slope will help you get to the clip point. Install J-hooks, then expand once more. Walk down the slope instead of through the cells or fully expand panels before installing J-hooks.
Envirolocks™, a panel connection mechanism that can support up to 310 pounds of weight, can be used to join sides together. For this phase, no mechanical tools will be required.
Step 5: Insert the filler. 1 to 2 inches of overfill, then compact.
